Visa Explained |
Visa Europe is the leading European payment system, owned and governed by its 4,600 European member banks.
Every day millions of European consumers and retailers use Visa to make and receive payments in Europe, and around the world - conveniently, quickly and securely.
Everyone knows the Visa card brand; our cards are accepted at millions of places worldwide. However, Visa the company is not so well understood – what it is, how it works and who owns it. These pages aim to change that.
Who we are
Visa Europe provides the brand, systems, services and rules that enable electronic payments between millions of European consumers, businesses and merchants.
Visa Europe is part of the global Visa network. It is an association of 4,600 European banks and financial institutions – together, they influence and oversee the management of the company, our systems and our operations. Visa Europe is a privately-owned incorporated company.
What we do
Visa Europe enables thousands of competing banks to serve the needs of millions of cardholders and merchants.
Visa itself does not issue any cards. We don’t sign up any merchants. We don’t have a role in determining cardholder or merchant rates. This is all done by our member banks.
Our role is to provide the products and services that make transactions fast, secure and convenient.
To do this, Visa connects four groups of business and individuals in the transaction process:
Issuing banks
The banks that issue Visa cards to their customers.
Acquiring banks
The banks that sign up merchants to accept Visa payments.
Cardholders
The people who use Visa cards to make fast and secure electronic payments.
Merchants
Businesses that accept Visa cards can benefit from increased speed, efficiency and security, together with guaranteed payment.
The value we bring – find out Visa is delivering real value to individuals and businesses, the Visa system brings benefits to entire economies
How we do it
Visa’s global payment system is based on three elements:
Our globally recognized brand
The latest payment and security technology
A set of rules, or operating regulations, that everyone must follow
To combine these parts of our business effectively, and to enable Visa payments to take place, we have to be:
An expert marketing organization
We license banks to use our brand and then work with them to promote it, so that consumers and merchants feel confident using Visa.
A formidable technology services provider
We provide a highly dependable processing infrastructure that reaches out to every bank and merchant worldwide. Our system ensures that transactions are quickly and securely authorized, cleared and settled.
A trusted broker and arbitrator
We work with banks and regulators to agree and enforce payment service rules that define the way that payments must work and the responsibilities of each participant in every transaction.
Fees
Visa doesn’t charge any fees to cardholders or merchants – instead, our member banks do this. Our income comes from fees paid by our 4,600 member banks.
Broadly speaking, the fees reflect the extent to which each bank makes use of our products and services
Visa helps millions of cardholders across the world better manage their finances by enabling them to pay ahead with a prepaid card, to pay now with a debit card or to pay later with a credit card. Beyond that, we offer customers peace of mind in knowing they can use their cards with convenience, security and ease, virtually anywhere in the world, at any time.
